FAQ | Jury Summons & Service

Names are randomly selected by a computer program through eHealth and provided to the Inspector of Court Offices. If your name or address is no longer correct, it is your responsibility to contact eHealth and update your personal information.

No. Once you return your Juror Summons indicating you can serve as a juror, you are expected to appear on the date and time indicated unless you are contacted by the Sheriff’s Office.

Please retain a copy of the Juror Summons with the date and time you are required to attend for jury selection.

If you are over 65, it is your choice if you wish to serve or not to serve as a juror.

If you do not wish to serve as a juror, please complete and return the Application for Relief from Jury Service on the Juror Summons.

If you are the parent or guardian of a student who is attending school away from home, you may fill out their Juror Summons. Indicate where the student is attending school and sign your name on their behalf. Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of the decision by the Sheriff’s Office.

If you are the caregiver of an adult over the age of 18 who is incapable of serving on a jury, you may fill out their Juror Summons. Indicate the reason they are not capable, and sign your name of their behalf. Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of the decision by the Sheriff’s Office.

If you have received a Juror Summons for a person who is deceased, please fill out, sign and return the Summons indicating that they have died.

In order to participate in the jury selection process, you must be a Canadian Citizen.

If you are not, you must still complete and return the Juror Summons. Indicate on the Application for Relief from Jury Service that you are not qualified to serve as a juror because you are not a Canadian citizen.

You will be notified of exemption by the Sheriff’s Office.

Please complete both the Juror Information Return and the Application for Relief from Jury Service on the Juror Summons and return it with your vacation/trip details.

If available, please include a travel itinerary. Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of the decision by the Sheriff’s Office.

Until you are notified of the Sheriff’s decision, you will be expected to appear for Jury Selection.

Financial assistance may be provided for prospective jurors or selected jurors as outlined below. If this does not address your concerns, please complete the Application for Relief from Jury Service on the Juror Summons and return to the Sheriff’s Office with supporting documentation. Proper documentation may indicate such things as, whether your employer will compensate your wages while serving on Jury Duty, why serving as a juror would cause financial hardship and other relevant background. Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of the decision by the Sheriff’s Office.

Until you are notified of the Sheriff’s decision, you will be expected to appear for Jury Selection.

Prospective jurors are expected to provide their own transportation to the court house for jury selection. They will be paid mileage if they travel from outside city limits. Prospective jurors may also be reimbursed for meals and accommodations if the Sheriff considers these expenses reasonable. Prospective jurors are also expected to arrange their own parking for jury selection and will be reimbursed if there is a cost.

The selection process does not usually take more than 2 hours.  It is important that prospective jurors show up at the time indicated on their Summons so that the Court can start on time.

Selected jurors will be paid $110 for each day or portion of each day beginning from the first day of jury service unless they are receiving income from their employer while sitting on a jury panel. Selected jurors will be assigned free parking after selection. Selected jurors may be paid mileage if travelling from outside city limits and reimbursed for meals and accommodations, as well as dependent care.

There can be occasions where, as a selected juror, you will be required to remain overnight. Should this occur, accommodations and meals will be provided.
