The Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan has introduced five associate judges to the Court.

Rani Grewall and Cynthia Yelland have been appointed to Saskatoon. Louis Browne, K.C., Darcia Connelly and Alexander Shalashniy (who, at the time of appointment, was the Court’s Registrar in Bankruptcy) have been appointed to Regina.

Effective October 1, 2026, the King’s Bench Amendment Act, 2026 was implemented, establishing associate judges within the Court for the first time. The new legislation provides for the appointment of associate judges by the Government of Saskatchewan, based on recommendations made by the Chief Justice of the Court of King’s Bench.

“We are very pleased to welcome Saskatchewan’s first associate judges,” the Honourable Chief Justice M.D. Popescul said. “This is an important step in the ongoing modernization of our courts and will help support access to justice and the timely resolution of matters in a busy and increasingly complex court system.”

Associate judges will be responsible for handling certain civil matters and family matters as assigned by the Chief Justice. All appointees have been members in good standing of a Canadian bar for at least 10 years preceding their appointment.
